Zwift Ride Frame vs Your Own Bike: Is It Actually Worth Buying?

Zwift Ride Frame vs Your Own Bike: Is It Actually Worth Buying?

If you have ever wrestled your good road bike onto a trainer at 6 am in a Canterbury winter, then wiped the sweat off it an hour later before swapping it back for the weekend ride, you already understand the problem the Zwift Ride is built to solve.

The Zwift Ride frame and the Zwift Ride bundle have just landed in the indoor trainer range, and they are easily one of the most talked-about pieces of indoor training kit we have seen in years. But there is a fair question sitting behind all the hype: why would you buy a dedicated indoor frame when you already own a perfectly good bike? Using your own bike is cheaper, after all.

Let's walk through what the Zwift Ride actually is, the honest pros and cons, and how to tell whether the frame or the full bundle is right for you.

What is the Zwift Ride frame?

The Zwift Ride Smart Frame is a purpose-built indoor cycling frame designed to pair with a Wahoo KICKR smart trainer. Think of it as a permanent, always-ready indoor bike that lives in your pain cave so your real bike never has to.

The clever part is in the handlebars. Built-in controllers let you steer, shift, queue workouts, fire off PowerUps and send RideOns to mates, all without reaching for a keyboard or phone. The virtual shifting is silent and instant, with no derailleur to index and no chain dropping mid-effort. It runs through the included Zwift Cog v2, so gear changes happen in the software rather than across a cassette.

It is also built for a whole household. The frame adjusts for riders between 152cm and 198cm (roughly 5 feet to 6 feet 6), and the only tool you need is a Frame Key that stores inside the frame itself. Saddle, bars, and reach all dial in within seconds, so your partner, your teenager, or a visiting mate can jump on and ride.

A few quick facts for the spec-minded:

  • Rider fit range: 152 to 198 cm
  • Max rider weight: 120 kg
  • Handlebar controllers: rechargeable, around 20 hours per charge
  • Pedals: flat pedals included, compatible with standard road and mountain pedals
  • Footprint: lower profile than a bike-and-trainer setup, and it packs away

The honest case for buying a Zwift Ride frame

Here is where it earns its keep over using your own bike.

Your good bike stays ready for the road. This is the big one, no more mounting and dismounting before and after every session. Your road or gravel bike stays clean, dialled and ready to ride outdoors, while the Zwift Ride waits indoors for the next session.

No sweat, no wear on your nice components. Indoor training is brutal on a bike. Sweat corrodes bolts and bearings, and hours of static grinding wear a drivetrain you paid good money for. The Zwift Ride takes all of that punishment so your pride and joy doesn't have to.

Built for sharing at home. This is where the Zwift Ride really shines. If two of you train indoors, swapping a single bike on and off a trainer is a hassle, and every mount and dismount is another chance to scratch or knock an expensive frame. The Zwift Ride adjusts between riders in seconds with the Frame Key, so you hop on and go. And because it runs the Zwift Cog rather than a normal cassette, you sidestep the drivetrain headache of two different bikes wearing out chains and cassettes at different rates. One consistent, silent drivetrain for everyone in the house.

Control at your fingertips. Steering, shifting, PowerUps, and menu navigation all live on the bars. Once you have raced or done a structured workout without lunging for the laptop, it is hard to go back.

Rock solid and built for the job. No frame flex, a comfortable saddle, and flat pedals so you can hop on in socks or trainers for a quick spin. Setup is genuinely simple, and there are no quick-release or thru-axle compatibility headaches that come with mounting certain bikes.

The honest cons (because you should hear them too)

We would rather you buy the right thing over the expensive thing, so here is the other side.

It costs more than using what you already own, no way around it. If budget is tight and you are happy swapping your bike on and off a trainer, your own bike plus a trainer is the cheaper path. The Zwift Ride is an investment in convenience and longevity, not the lowest entry price.

It is a dedicated piece of kit. It packs away, but it is still a 25.5 kg frame that lives in your space. If you are in a small flat with nowhere to leave it set up, factor that in.

One crank length, adjustable fit. The geometry is designed to suit a wide range of riders rather than replicate one rider's exact bike fit. For most people, that is a non-issue, but if you have a very specific position from a professional bike fitting, it is worth a chat with us first.

Will it work with your trainer?

The Zwift Ride frame bolts onto a direct-drive smart trainer, and trainer compatibility is the one thing worth getting right before you buy. Zwift keeps an up-to-date list of Zwift Ready and Zwift Cog compatible trainers, so it pays to check yours against it first.

Here is the part people miss. The frame comes with a 14-tooth Zwift Cog, which is the version made for Wahoo KICKR trainers. If you own a Tacx or Elite smart trainer, it uses a different freehub and requires the alternate 18-tooth cog, which is sold separately and is not included in the box. It is an easy and inexpensive add-on, just something to budget for. Grab the matching version here: Zwift Cog for Tacx or Zwift Cog for Elite.

Not sure what trainer you have, or whether it will play nicely? Flick us a message or pop in. We will check it for you before you spend a cent.

Frame or bundle: which one do you need?

This is the question we get most, and the answer is simple once you know what you already have.

Buy the Zwift Ride Smart Frame ($1,699.99) if you already own a compatible Wahoo KICKR smart trainer. You bolt the frame onto your existing trainer, and you are away. No need to pay twice for a trainer you already have.

Buy the Zwift Ride Bundle with KICKR Core 2 ($2,699.99) if you are starting from scratch. This is the all-in-one box: the proven KICKR Core trainer, the Zwift Ride frame, the Zwift Cog, pedals, thru axle, frame key, phone tray, and charging cable. Everything you need to be riding on Zwift the same day it arrives. It is our staff pick for newcomers, and buying the two together costs less than buying the frame and a trainer separately.

For riders who want the very top end, there is also a KICKR V6 bundle ($3,299.99) with Wahoo's flagship trainer. Stock on that one moves fast, so ask us about availability.

The KICKR Core bundle delivers serious performance too: power accuracy within 2%, up to 1800W, simulated gradients to 16%, and a quiet electromagnetic resistance unit. It is a proper training tool, not a toy.

Delivery and setup

We ship the Zwift Ride nationwide, including rural delivery addresses. Do note that some assembly is required out of the box. It is straightforward, and the only tool you need (the Frame Key) is included, so most people are riding within the hour. If you would rather see it built and ready, come and try one in-store.

Why buy your Zwift Ride from Pushbikes

We have been helping Canterbury cyclists find the right gear since 2001, and indoor training is no different. Buy from us, and you get genuine advice from people who actually ride and train themselves indoors, support if you have a setup question, and the backing of our Best Price Guarantee. Interest-free financing is available, allowing you to spread the cost, and shipping is free on orders over $150.

The Zwift Ride frame and bundle are in stock right now. Come and see one set up at our Rangiora or Christchurch stores, or order online, and we will get you rolling.

Zwift Ride FAQs

What size riders does the Zwift Ride fit?
It adjusts for riders from 152 to 198 cm (roughly 5 feet to 6 feet 6), with a maximum rider weight of 120 kg.

Do I need my own bike to use it?
No. The Zwift Ride is a complete frame in its own right, and the bundle even includes the smart trainer, so you do not put your own bike on it at all.

Will it work with my smart trainer?
The frame includes a 14-tooth Zwift Cog made for Wahoo KICKR trainers. Tacx and Elite trainers need the alternate 18-tooth cog, which is sold separately. Check the Zwift compatibility list or ask us if you are unsure.

Can I use my own pedals?
Yes. Flat pedals are included so you can ride straight away, and they can be swapped for any standard road or mountain pedals, including clipless.

Does it work with Apple TV?
Yes, it does. Apple TV users can pair via the Zwift Companion app, which serves as a bridge to overcome the Apple TV's Bluetooth connection restrictions.

Is assembly required, and can you deliver to rural areas?
Some assembly is required, but it is straightforward, and the only tool you need is the included Frame Key. We ship nationwide, including rural delivery addresses.
